Novel solutions for ISR and spectrum operations, planning and management

​The driving force behind our wireless research is efficiency—maximizing use of physical and link layer network resources, particularly electromagnetic spectrum. Our wireless scientists are applying their network performance and optimization know-how to develop new techniques for optimizing operating parameters and deriving full capacity and spectral efficiency. We are also leveraging our network planning, database technology and software engineering skills to facilitate a new generation of spectrum planning and management systems.

Our work

RF spectrum operations 

  • Our spectrum sensing research and development includes low-cost networked spectrum sensors for cooperative sensing and C-UAS applications as well as SecureSense, our spectrum situational awareness solution that provides affordable, real-time intelligence and rapidly identifies unexpected emitters 
  • We are designing and implementing systems for efficient spectrum management and spectrum usage measurement for testing and training ranges. Accurate, validated spectrum usage metrics are critical to balance competing demands for RF spectrum to support DOD needs 
  • Our research in dynamic spectrum sharing ranges from developing solutions for 5G spectrum sharing with airborne radar to dynamic spectrum re-configuration for tactical radios and leadership in international standards organization and TV white space sharing 

AI, ML and optimization for RF / ISR systems 

  • We are leveraging machine learning (ML) and optimization for 5G including developing applications of ML for RF signal detection, classification and processing, as well as investigation of the adversarial ML attack surface and threat vectors  
  • We’re creating a novel artificial intelligence (AI) processing architecture in combination with innovative photonic hardware and an algorithm for specific emitter identification to enable breakthrough AI functionality. We are also developing new data-enabled neural network (NN) architectures to provide accurate, energy-efficient AI for tactical defense systems 
  • Our Balanced RF Resource Allocator for Heterogeneous Multi-Objective Systems technology coordinates RF mission goals on multiple-function RF payloads in spectrum, space and time supporting distributed battle management and enabling success in complex and dynamic environments  

​Wireless communications and signal processing 

  • ​We’re developing an adaptive distributed array system that provides low-cost, resilient long-range communications for challenging non-line-of-sight radio environments. Our solution works with existing tactical radios and unmodified tactical waveforms and significantly lowers the risk of detection, interference and jamming  
  • Our researchers are leaders in the research and development of advanced, intelligent signal processing techniques and systems for diverse military contexts and customers in the areas of wireless communications, distributed electronic warfare and signals intelligence (SIGINT) 
  • We are active contributors to the gnu radio community in software-defined, radio-based signal processing applications such as channel equalization and adaptive event processing
