Modernization is essential for secure, efficient transport of goods and of people to and from jobs, schools and other critical locations.  

    Advances in communications, networking, cybersecurity and information and sensor technologies are poised to successfully address these challenges. Leveraging technology breakthroughs in Internet of Things (IoT), sensor networks, intelligent transportation systems and smart, connected vehicles can improve safety, efficiency and security.  ​

    Today’s intelligent transportation systems (ITS) combine sensing, machine learning, analytics, control and communications to support advanced, innovative applications—from traffic management, signal control and traffic surveillance, to vehicle navigation and pedestrian and cyclist warning systems. ITS also supports public transportation, automatic vehicle location, traveler information and electronic payment. Leveraging advances in communications and networking allows performance optimization and provides passengers and system operators with up-to-date information about trips and network operating conditions.

    Solution

    We are a knowledgeable leader in the provision of sophisticated services and solutions for the transportation sector and support transportation customers in architecture, design, implementation and management of ITS. We also offer full life cycle support for adoption of secure communications technology to upgrade transportation networks. Our services include network assessment planning and support for deployment of fiber, cellular LTE / 5G, wireless, cloud and IoT technologies.

    ITS has a significantly larger cyber footprint and attack surface and introduces data privacy concerns. These systems must be protected to prevent potentially crippling impacts to our country’s municipalities. The challenges of ITS security assessment and risk management differ in both scope and technique from traditional IT cybersecurity.  

    We played a critical role in the authoring of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Highway Administration’s Best Practice Guide for Penetration Testing for ITS. We are currently advising the DOT on how to apply cybersecurity best practices to: 
    • Develop and maintain effective security programs and policies 
    • Perform vulnerability assessments and penetration testing on their infrastructure and connected vehicle and IoT pilots 
    • Establish monitoring programs with SecureSmart and other tools to prepare for a challenging future​
