Bus Defender products are proven solutions for cyber survivability of platforms and warfighting systems using the MIL-STD-1553 data bus. Fielded warfighting systems using MIL-STD-1553 buses are vulnerable to destructive cyberattacks from multiple entry points on aircraft, vehicles, ships, and space platforms.

Bus Defender protects against diverse run-time attacks, including zero-day attacks and known vulnerabilities, without requiring any modifications to 1553 platforms—including line-replaceable units and weapons replaceable assemblies—or to systems software or configurations. Bus Defender can be flexibly deployed in a variety of configurations to meet platform-specific requirements. Maintenance Defender protects platforms and automated test equipment (ATE) from cyber attacks during data uploads and maintenance, test, and diagnostic processes. The Bus Offender product leverages powerful traffic generation capabilities to easily create novel cyberattacks and identify platform vulnerabilities.

How it works

Bus Defender products deliver total cyber resiliency for fielded MIL-STD-1553 systems, providing on-platform, real-time active cyber defense for operational continuity and off-platform defense during maintenance, test and software loading. 

Bus Defender has proven performance in preventing cyberattacks at diverse DoD test, evaluation, and operational demonstration events:
  • Achieved Acquisition Milestone B (TRL-6) based on System Integration Laboratory (SIL) testing
  • Successfully blocked threats and maintained full functionality and availability in Cyber Cyclone demonstration on operational ground vehicle
  • Integration, SIL, and on-platform demonstration and testing on aircraft, fighter jet, ground vehicle, and helicopter
  • Prevents cyberattacks from DoD red team testers from all service branches  

​Bus Defender™ for on-board systems

​Bus Defender performs real-time, low-delay network protection to defend weapons platforms from attacks launched or propagated over the MIL-STD-1553 data bus. It is based on patented, sophisticated security processing algorithms and can also be designed into next-generation subsystems to provide built-in security.

​Maintenance Defender for maintenance, test and operational flight program (OFP) loading applications

​Maintenance Defender is an off-board device that can be immediately deployed to protect data uploads and maintenance and test access to operational platforms via the 1553 bus-based maintenance port on an aircraft or vehicle. Maintenance Defender is used to defend against malware propagation from compromised LRUs / WRAs via test equipment and to protect 1553 systems from attack or inadvertent misuse during maintenance and test.

  • Detects and blocks malware from being introduced into an aircraft or vehicle during maintenance and test operations
  • Eliminates propagation of malware from compromised LRU / WRA via the test system
  • Prevents loading of malicious or compromised OFPs via the 1553 data bus
