Smart phones, tablets, and other wearable devices are ubiquitous and indispensable to modern life. To deliver seamless communications and information access, intelligent mobile devices operating in a network-aware mode maintain up-to-date knowledge of in-range connections and their attributes; for example, with WiFi enabled, a list of in-range networks is displayed along with their security status, wireless strength, and other network characteristics. This same capability that supports reliable mobile services can be exploited to track unsuspecting mobile users, resulting in loss of privacy, damage to personal security, and risk of physical harm.

Peraton Labs’ mobile anti-tracking solution provides powerful situational awareness for anti-tracking protection. It is an innovative, passive, low-cost, and scalable solution, featuring configurable parameters, flexible alerting, user-friendly search, visualization, and mapping. The mobile anti-tracking solution allows Android users to Identify electronic devices that are nearby, find devices which are following them, and discover their electronic footprint. It's a low-cost solution that leverages commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) capability and scales to track a million or more observations. Currently provided in two form factors—a Pixel phone with internal wireless chip and a battery pack case enclosing an external wireless chip for android phones—the mobile anti-tracking solution is available for trials and field testing in a fully-functional prototype implementation.

How it works

The mobile anti-tracking solution consists of a user-configured, downloadable Android app, a wireless chip, and a database. It uses the following approach to provide situational awareness for device tracking.
  • ​Passively observe a selector for another device (Cellular identifier (IMEI, IMZ, etc.); WiFi or Bluetooth mobile access controller (MAC) address; TPMS identifier; etc.)
  • Enter observed selector into local database for tracking via
    • Selector ID
    • Lat /long /alt (of user device when observation made)
    • Timestamp
  • Notify user via customizable alerting criteria

The mobile anti-tracking solution utilizes an innovative and scalable algorithm for determining the farthest distance between observations of a given selector. The longer the distance, the greater the chance that the selector is being used to track the user’s device. The algorithm and approach have been demonstrated to scale to more than 1M observations with high performance.

​The mobile solution also offers flexible database browsing and search capability, to improve  situational awareness and enhance user knowledge of their electronic footprint.

Features

Customizable alerting criteria
  • Previously-flagged selector has been observed
  • Selector has been observed at least N times, with observations at a given distance M (meters) apart
  • Configurable criteria include parameters N and M for observations; flagging (and de-flagging) selectors to be whitelisted or ignored; etc.
Flexible database browsing and search capability
  • Browse behavior of individual selectors by selector, id, time, location, following distance, etc.
  • Display observations by location with mapping on OpenStreetMap for visualization
  • Search by keywords, selectors, locations, etc.
