Accelerating Military Training Through Dynamic Spectrum Management

Picture
Peraton’s OSCAR system improves training efficiency, automates frequency allocation, and reduces the time spent locating signal interference from hours or days to under ten minutes, per a recent case study published by the National Spectrum Consortium.

Military training ranges face increasingly congested electromagnetic environments and growing signal interference—conditions that threaten mission effectiveness and burden spectrum managers with complex and time consuming tasks. Peraton’s OSCAR (Operational Spectrum Comprehension, Analytics, and Response) system addresses these challenges, delivering efficient spectrum management, automated frequency allocation, and enhanced spectrum visibility.

OSCAR streamlines spectrum operations across the lifecycle, from sophisticated spectrum planning and interference mitigation during missions to after-action analysis. With successful demonstrations in nearly a dozen U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) field exercises and a permanent installation at Fort Huachuca, OSCAR is poised to optimize spectrum management not only on constrained DoD ranges, but also for inter-range sharing, tactical use cases, and spectrum sharing between federal and commercial operators.

“OSCAR supports heterogeneous sensor networks with airborne, maritime, and ground-based sensors and delivers automated, efficient spectrum management and situational awareness in dynamic, mobile environments. We continue to advance the OSCAR system to serve the needs of the Office of the Secretary of Defense under the National Spectrum Consortium’s Spectrum Integration System Core (SIS Core) project. We are proud to help ensure the DoD wins every spectrum contest.” – Todd Borkey, chief technology officer, Peraton, and president, Peraton Labs

OSCAR incorporates key features that enhance spectrum decision support and enable efficient spectrum management for multiple use cases in diverse environments.
  • Modular and extensible software architecture for analyzing wireless activity, locating and mitigating interference in real-time, deconflicting concurrent operations, and automating frequency allocations
  • Software platform with containerized microservices that allows sensor tasking, interference identification, and related functions to be changed and added
  • Flexible sensor network system has demonstrated compatibility with over half a dozen leading COTS RF sensors and integrates easily with existing range infrastructure and spectrum monitoring assets
  • Streamlined portal with tiered permissions access, request and assignment workflows, intuitive visualizations, and the ability to create customizable alerts
  • Archive of spectrum measurements and planning information to visualize historical data, calculate spectrum usage metrics, and automate report generation
